Real`s CL magic strikes again as late Bellingham winner stuns City
2025-02-13
LONDON: Real Madrid`s Galacticos just don`t know when they are beaten. Manchester City just keep on making the same mistakes.
The Spanish giants worked their magic in the Champions League to show once more why they are the record winners in the competition as Jude Bellingham`s stoppage-time goal sealed a stunning comeback and a 3-2 lead in their blockbuster playoff tie against City on Tuesday.
In six frantic minutes at the end of a breathless first leg, the reigning European champions scored twice and now go into next week`s return match in Spain as strongfavouritestoreachthelast 16.
Erling Haaland`s double his first goals in five appearances against Real at the Etihad Stadium looked to have secured Pep Guardiola`s side a slender advantage. But Brahim Diaz and then Bellingham silenced the home crowd and extend a sorry record for City that has seen them concede seven goals in the last 15 minutes of Champions League games this season.
`I don`t know how to put it into words straight away, it`s so raw and frustrating for everyone, said City defender John Stones.
`It`s a feeling of anger and frustration. We need to see games out better. We need to step up when these bad moments happen.
Bellingham slid in to convert Vinicius Junior`s lobbed pass in the second minute of added time to bring back memories of Real`s dramatic comeback against City in the semi-final in 2022. Then it was Rodrygo who scored twice from the 90th and Real eventually sent Guardiola`s team crashing out in extra time.
`It was a weird one. We played some of our best football of the season and ended up behind, Bellingham told Amazon Prime.
`I don`t care what form City are in they are still an unbelievable team. It`s always tricky to play against them and we finally took the chance at the end.
At least City have a chance to salvage the tie in the second leg, but the sense of deflation was clear after such a late collapse.
`It`s not the first time, unfortu-nately, it happened many times and that`s why it`s difficult, Guardiola said. `I`ve been here for many years and we have been an extraordinary team. But in the moment I`m not able... I`m not good enough, you know, to give something to [give] composure to the team, to [know] how to manage the situations.
It is the fourth consecutive season City and Real have met in the knockout phase of the competition, with the winner in each of the past three encounters going on to lift the trophy.
City overcame a slow start at the Etihad and took the lead in the 19th minute as Haaland steered past Thibaut Courtois after Josko Gvardiol chested down a pass from Jack Grealish.
Vinicius hit the crossbar for Real before City defender Manuel Akanji did likewise with a header, while Haaland was denied a second goal right after half-time when his deflected shot came back off the woodwork.
Real equalised on the hour after Fedrico Valverde`s freekick was blocked, but Dani Ceballos recovered the rebound and chipped the ball into the box, where Kylian Mbappe`s mishit volley looped into the net after coming off his shin and leaving Ederson stranded.
Ceballos, however, was devastated after he fouled Phil Foden and the referee awarded City the penalty. Haaland converted the spot-kick in the 80th and the Premier League team probablythought they would take the win.
But former City player Brahim Diaz levelled for Real in the 86th minute after a dreadful kick by Ederson, and Bellingham had the final say.
Paris St Germain took command of an all-French clash by beating Brest 3-0 and Juventus scored late in the game to take a 2-1 win against PSV Eindhoven.
Borussia Dortmund also look on course for the next round after a 3-0 win at Sporting Lisbon.
PSG DOWN BREST In France, Ousmane Dembele continued his sensational goalscoring form as he netted twice for PSG to extend his scoring streak to 10 games in a row. His outstanding form as has seen him score 18 goals during that run.
It was his shot that led to PSG taking the lead through a 21stminute penalty after Pierre Lees-Melou handled in the area.
Vitinha converted the spot kick.
Brest, playing an hour away in Guingamp because their own stadium does not meet UEFA requirements, twice went close to levelling against the runaway Ligue 1 leaders.
Abdallah Sima powered a header against the post and Achraf Hakimi brushed the other upright when attempting to knock the ball behind for a corner.
Dembele grabbed PS G`s second on the stroke of half-time when he broke free down the right and curled a shot inside the post.
His second came in the 66thwhen he pounced on a loose ball and burst into the penalty area to score his 23rd goal of the season.
`Ousmane is full of confidence just now. He was good in 2024 and he is even better in 2025, said PSG coach Luis Enrique.
KOVAC WINS FIRST GAME Niko Kovac made his debut as Dortmund coach with a defeat to VfB Stuttgart last weekend, but celebrated his first win with an important victory against Sporting.
The German side, last season`s Champions League runners-up, struggled to create danger in the first half, while Sporting only lacked a goal to go with their domination.
The situation, however, changed after the break. Serhou Guirassy`s towering header off Julian Brandt`s cross to broke the deadlock in the 60th before he turned provider eight minutes later, hitting a great cross into Pascal Gross, who smashed a firsttime effort home with his thigh.
Karim Adeyemi put the game to bed in the 82nd after exchanging a one-two with Brandt and slotting a low finish into the net.
Sporting haven`t won in five Champions League games since coach Ruben Amorim left for Manchester United in November.
JUVENTUS LEAD Substitute Samuel Mbangula grabbed a late winner for Juventus in Turin and in doing so claimed his first Champions League goal.
The 21-year-old Belgian forward reacted quickly when goalkeeper Walter Benitez spilled a low cross from the right by Francisco Conceiçao in the 82nd and thumped in from close range in the 82nd minute.
Juventus went ahead through a ferocious Weston McKennie strike after the United States international smashed a firsttime effort into the roof of the net from just inside the penalty area in the 34th.
Ivan Perisic drew level after brilliantly controlling a rebound from Noa Lang`s block before tucking the ball into the bottom corner, but the Italians had the final word and took the advantage in the tie with Mbangula`s first-time shot.-Agencies
