Unending plight of pensioners

By Our Correspondent 2017-04-13
MUZAFFARGARH: Law Enforcement Agencies (LEAs) have failed to help the pension fraud victims as a court has bailed out six officials of the National Bank of Pakistan.

Some of those affected by the scam say the main culprit (bank manager) has been let off the hook. They allege that the Federal Investigation Agency or the National Accountability Bureau has failed to trace Muntazir Mehdi who fled after refunding Rs5 million last year.

Officials of the National Bank of Pakistan and accounts office were responsible for embezzling Rs400 million from the accounts of pensioners. The FIA arrested six bankers who were granted bail by court.

District Accounts Officer Anwar Chishti said the State Bank had given the amount equivalent to embezzled money to his department for further disbursement.

It is learnt that nearly 10,000 pensioners draw pension from the NBP`s main branch in Muzaffargarh every month. Once suspicion about massive irregularities arose, District Accounts Officer Anwar Chishti informed the DCO and he sent a letter to the FIA and Accountant General Punjab for an inquiry.

Meanwhile, the NBP suspended cashiers Rab Nawaz Bhutta and Muntazir Mehdi from service for embezzlement and both of them deposited Rs5 million with the bank. Five inquiries were started by departments and the State Bank asked the NBP to deposit embezzled money with the accounts office.
