THE disturbing practice of organising cattle racing eventsin certain areas of Punjab, Kashmir, and Sindh must come to an end. The act of riding and brutally beating oxen is a heinous act that warrants condemnation from society and an immediate ban from the authorities.
Unfortunately, the use of a needlelike stick to beat incessantly these defenceless animals to make them run faster is a stark reminder of the cruelty and disregard for animal welfare that has always been a characteristic of such races.
In essence, itis nothing short of animal torture, and it is our collective responsibility to speak out against it.
Only by doing so can we stop this brutal treatment meted out to these innocent animals.
Not only does this practice cause immense suffering to the animals involved, it perpetuates a culture of cruelty and disregard for life. It is essential that we recognise the inherent value and dignity of all living beings, and treat them with kindness, compassion and respect.
The relevant authorities should takeimmediate action to ban this practice altogether. It is time for us to come together as a society and condemn such acts of brutality.
We owe it to ourselves, our children andthe animals that share our planet to create a more compassionate and just world.
