Law on the anvil to provide legal cover to private dispute settlement bodies: minister

NAWABSHAH: Sindh Minister for Home Ziaul Hasan Lanjar has said his department is working on a law for alternate dispute resolution committee to be chaired by deputy commissioners and session judges to provide legal cover to settlement of disputes through private arbitration forums, like jirgas.
The minister told reporters after attending the181st passing-out parade of policemen and policewomen at Police Training Centre in Shahdadpur on Saturday that he had asked waderas and sardars in Kashmore, Ghotki and other areas of Upper Sindh in his meeting with them to uphold justice in their private settlements and try to settle disputes among communities to ensure peace as these feuds provided environment for the creation of dacoits.
He said in answer to aquestion that a police station should be strengthened with good infrastructure and resources.
There was no need to set up a police station at every corner as was done in past in Sanghar as it would be a hurdle to policing, he said.
He claimed that law and order situation was much better and incidents of kidnapping had stopped due to better policing.
There were only four cases of abduction involv-ing a Hindu trader and three Custom officials and their kidnappers had agreed after negotiations to free the officials but they wanted them to release the Hindu first, he said.
He said that they had a very clear stand that police would never be blackmailed by any dacoit or criminal at any cost and would surely eliminate the dacoit culture.
To a question about continued captivity of Priya Kumari, he said that policewere making all-out efforts to ensure safe recovery of Priya Kumari.
About burning issue of water, the minister said that the government must think for the next 20-30 years and a water policy was needed to save Indus Delta. No improvement could be brought until a think tank was constituted to formulate a clear policy, he said.
Earlier, addressing the passing-out ceremony, the minister said that genuineissues of PTC Shahdadpur would be resolved on prioritybasis.
PTC Principal Zahida Parveen Jamro said that the centre faced 12-hour loadshedding, problematic drainage system that needed immediate repair and maintenance and a swimming pool. As many as 393 recruits, including 50 females, passed out this year, she said.
IGP Sindh Ghulam Nabi Memon alos spoke at the ceremony.
