KARACHI: Dock workers have threatened to take `extreme measures` if their demand to impose a labour cess on newly constructed South Asia Pakistan Terminal isnot acceptedin three days.

In a letter sent to the Karachi Port Trust chairman and Karachi Dock Labour Board (KDLB) on Friday, the Karachi Harbour and Dock Workers Union reminded the authorities that both sides reached an agreement 16 months ago, but it has yet to be implemented.

The letter was signed by union`s secretary general Abdullah Dawood. He told Dawn that dock workers felt that they were being deceived by the management which did not want to fulfil its commitments.

Mr Dawood said the union had been assured for the previous eight days that Minister for Ports and Shipping Hasil Bezenjo would directly hold talks with them.

Younus Vayani, the vice-chairman of KDLB, told Dawn the KPT chairman who was away from the country was expected to return today and would hold talks to settle the issue amicably.
