Financial woes of terror victims not addressed, Senate committee told

ISLAMABAD: The Senate Special CommitteeonMarginalisedSegments on Monday regretted the government`s lack of concern over timely provision of financial support to victims of terrorism.
The committee, chaired by Senator Nisar Mohammad, had sought details of efforts made by the government to address financial dif ficulties faced by f amilies af fected by terrorism.
Irked by incomplete responses from government officials, the committee forwarded their reservations toSenate chairman Raza Rabbani.
Officials of the finance ministry, however, told the committee that the matter was not related to their department, and relevant details might be available with the interior ministry.
The finance ministry`s response invited a barrage of criticism from members belonging to various political parties.
Senator Dr Mohammad Ali Khan Saif of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement said `it is the typical mindset of bureaucracy to delay and divert theissues`. `The realissueisimproper system which is based on fudged fig-ures,` he said.
The finance secretary of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) informed the committee that Rs400 million had been allocated for the victims of terrorism in Fata during the ongoing fiscal year 2016-17, out of which Rs200m was spent.
Stating the budget hgures, he said Rs100,000 were given in grant to the injured, and Rs400,000 to the family of the deceased, while Rs10 billion was disbursed over two years for reconstruction of houses including, Rs160,000 for a partially damaged house and Rs400,000 for reconstruction of the whole house.
