KARACHI: A vocational training project for people with disabilities was launched on Monday at a local hotel.

The initiative is a collaborative venture of Aman Institute for Vocational Training (AMANTECH), Special Olympics Pakistan (SOP) and Network of Organisations Working with People with Disabilities, Pakistan (NOWPDF). Titled `Project Shahpar`, the venture was announced in April this year.

`The inclusion of persons with special needs through this pilot project is a proud moment for us. I believe these trainees will achieve their due potential and upon success, we intend to expand the project further, Ahmad Jalal, chief executive officer of The Aman Foundation, remarked.

Special Olympics Pakistan chairperson Ronak Lakhani said that such collaborations opened a door of opportunities for persons with disabilities who would hopefully advance in their careers after training.

`Perceptions need to be revised and success stories established so sympathy becomes empathy and apathy becomes social action as we equip persons with disabilities with marketable skills,` said president NOWPDP Amin Hashwani.

The vocational training project is slated for July and will take place at the AMANTECH premises in Karachi.
