WASHINGTON: Pakistan was reported on Tuesday (July 11) to have made the first definite offer to back United States police action in Korea with ground troops. A Senator, who did not wish his identity disclosed, said the Senate Armed Services Committee was told during a closed door session ... that Pakistan had offered foot soldiers to help the hardpressed Americans. He did not know the number of troops which might be involved.
Presumably, they would be token forces. ...
The Pakistan offer presumably was discussed when General Omar Bradley, Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, gave the Committee a report on the Korean war... . ...Inquiries made by Dawn ... showed highly placed Pakistan Government officers were unaware of any such development. ...
[Meanwhile, as reported by news agencies in Washington,] Republican Senator Owen Brewster said on Wednesday (July 12) that President Truman should give General Douglas MacArthur blanket authority to use atomic bombs in the Korean war `whenever he thinks it is needed.` Brewster told reporters that `General MacArthur ... is ... a better judge of what is needed.` The bomb can be used only on orders from the President.
