2015-08-13
GILGIT: The Gilgit-Baltistan Legislative Assembly on Wednesday adopted a unanimous resolution demanding of the federal government to take GB representatives into confidence before executing the multi-billion dollar China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project.

Tabled by Rizwan Ali of Majlis Wahdatul Muslimeen (MWM), it demanded that as the GB was gateway to the project, GBLA members should be given representation in the central advisory committee on CPEC.

The resolution also demanded establishing two economic zones in the region. After implementation of the CPEC, GB would become a commercial hub, benefitting both Pakistan and China, central Asian and European countries, said the resolution.

Speaking on the resolution, deputy speaker Jaffarullah Khan alleged India had set up a special wing headed by two army generals to create sectarian tension in the region to sabotage the corridor project.

PPP member Imran Nadeem Shigri said economic corridor would pass through the region covering a 500 hundred kilometer area, but added he didn`t think Islamabad would pay heed to what people of GB wanted.

PML-N`s Aurangzab Advocate said CPEC would change the landscape of the region, and suggested that seminars should be arranged to create awareness about benefits of the mega project.

Speaking on the occasion, MWM member Kacho Imtiaz said GB should be given priority in employment for the project. PML-N member Maj (r) Mohammed Ameen said if GB was ignored then the people would protest.-Correspondent
