RAWALPINDI: A group of armed individuals entered Benazir Bhutto Hospital (BBH) late on Friday and harassedyoung doctors allegedly on behalfofa senior doctor from the hospital.

The group was called to the hospital by a senior doctor from the anaesthesia department after a verbal dispute with some young doctors who argued with him when he refused to pay canteen staffers for his food.

The group reportedly snuck into the doctors` hostel where the senior doctor allegedly humiliated a young doctor at gunpoint.

A police contingent reached the hospital to control the situation and negotiated with those involved in the presence of the hospital administration.

According to hospital officials, a senior doctor refused to pay his canteen bill on Friday night and began shouting at the wait staff, attracting the attention ofyoung doctors sitting nearby.

`Two young doctors approached the senior doctor and asked him to pay the poor canteen owner, at which he became infuriated and ransacked the canteen,` an official said.

He said a brawl occurred between the senior and jun-ior doctors, and the senior doctor threatened to teach the young doctors a lesson at the hands of his men outside the hospital.

`The doctor called some outsiders and asked them to come to the hospital with weapons,` he claimed.

He said that soon after, unknown men stormed into the hospital, evacuated the car park outside the emergency department and terrorised doctors, paramedics and visitors.

The official said the group went to the doctors` hostel, where they caught a young doctor and humiliated him at gunpoint.

A heavy contingent of police was called to the hospital and they along with administration high-ups negotiated between the two parties. The dispute between the senior doctor and the young doctors was later resolved.

However, City Police Of ficer Faisal Rana told the press on Saturday that there was a brawl between two doctors, Shafique and Idrees, at BBH. He said the police have received a report and are investigating the incident.

Another senior police officer claimed no armed individuals entered BBH, and said the Young Doctors Assocation had begun circulating this rumour.

BBH medical superintendent Dr Raffique and the senior doctor in question could not be reached for comment.
