Traffic plan for four-day IDEAS-2016 announced

KARACHI: To insure smooth flow of traffic during the four days of 9th International Defence Exhibition and seminar IDEAS-2016, to be held at the Expo Centre later this month, the office of the deputy inspector general of police (traffic) on Saturday unveiled its traffic plan for all public, commercial and private vehicles from Nov 22 to 25.

SSP Erum Awan briefed on the arrangements regarding the matter during a presentation organised by the Defence Export Promotion Organisation (DEPO). She said some 1,450 police personnel would be deployed along the routes throughout the four days.

`DIG-Traffic Asif Aijaz Shaikh will be looking over the entire arrangements and each sector will be the responsibility of the SSPs, she said, adding that police mobiles would be available for assistance at all the key points. `In case of anyroad mishap, there will be recovery vehicles on standby as well.

Explaining the alternative routes/ diversions, she said they would be displaying banners all over the city for the convenience of the general public. Roads, too, along the routes are being cleared and carpeted. All commercial vehicles coming from Karachi airport towards the National Stadium through Karsaz will be diverted towards Baloch Colony.

They may also make a U-turn from the Tipu Sultan Road bridge towards Shaheed-i-Millat Road to approach the Jail flyover, University Road, Gharibabad, etc.

But due to security reasons on day one of the international exhibition, Nov 22, both tracks of University Road will be closed till 1pm from Jafri optics to civic centre for vehicular traffic.

All commercial vehicles coming from the SITE area to proceed towards Sharea Faisal or Karsaz will be diverted from Liaquatabd No 10 and Shahrah-i-Pakistan. All vehiclescomingfromLiaquatabd,Gharibabad to proceed towards Sharea Faisal or Karsaz will be diverted before the Hassan Square flyover on the left towards Sehba Akhtar Road and University Road where they can make a U-turn to Jafri Optics, KDA Scheme 1, the back lanes of the National Stadium and the office of the Lyari Development Authority to reach Karsaz and onwards.

Otherwise they can go from University Road to the NIPA traffic intersection and then make a U-turn towards Rashid Minhas Road to reachShareaFaisalwhenthe Hassan Square flyover is closed.

All heavy or commercial vehicles coming from the Safoora Goth side via NIPA heading towards the city will be diverted towards the left from the NIPA bridge towards Rashid Minhas Road.

All light vehicles coming from the Safoora Goth side via NIPA and heading towards the city will also be diverted left towards Jafri Optics, KDA Scheme 1, back lanes of theNational Stadium, the Steel Yard cut, Stadium Road to Dalmia or the LDA office from where they can make a U-turn to Karsaz.

Meanwhile, all vehicles coming from New Town and going towards Liaquatabad will be diverted left from the Askari Park cut towards Altaf Hussain Barelvi Road and onwards.

When University Road to NIPA and U-turn towards Rashid Minhas Road and Sharea Faisal and the Hassan Square flyover are closed, all public and other vehicles coming from Liaquatabd, Gharibabad and looking to go to Sharea Faisal or Karsaz will be diverted before the bridge towards University Road to make a U-turn to Jafri Optics, KDA Scheme 1, the back lanes of the National Stadium, Steel Yard Cut, Stadium Road and the LDA office from where they can make a U-turn to Karsaz and onwards.

Traffic coming from NIPA towards the city will be diverted from Jafri Optics towards KDA Scheme 1 and the back lanes of the National Stadium to Stadium Road via the Steel Yard cut and Bahria college from where it can make a U-turn towards the Aga Khan Hospital or Habib Ibrahim Rehmatullah Road to be on its way from there as the road from Jafri Optics up to Hassan Square will remain closed during exhibition hours.

Meanwhile, public transport and other heavy vehicles coming from Sohrab Goth towards the city are advised to use Shahrah-i-Pakistan and Shershah Road to head towards Board Office. Similarly, traffic coming from University Road towards the city should use the left turn at NIPA to get on to Rashid Minhas Road.

During the exhibition hours (8am to 3pm) on all the four days, the road will be closed from Hassan Square up to the stadium intersection on Sir Shah Sulaiman Road. But Stadium Road/Pir Sibghatullah Shah Rashidi Road will remain open during IDE AS-2016.

Only red, green and blue sticker-bearing vehicles will be allowed to proceed from the National Stadium bridge to the Expo Centerfor their designated parking areas.

Heavy, public and commercial vehicles coming from Habib Bank in SIT E towards Hakeem Ibn-i-Sina Road will be diverted from Liaquatabad No 10 to Shahrah-i-Pakistan.

Only light vehicles will be allowed to proceed towards Sir Shah Sulaiman Road and take a left turn before Hassan Square to get on to University Road via Sehba Akhtar Road.

Heavy, public and commercial vehicles coming from Karsaz towards the National Stadium will not be allowed from the Karsaz flyover.

Also, no vehicle will be permitted to park along the route around Expo Centre.
