Govt `woos` lawyer bodies through grants

LAHORE: The Punjab government has given millions in grant to different bar associations apparently to win over the support of lawyers community.

`The Punjab government has provided Rs30 million grant to the Lahore, Rs2.5m to Ferozewala and Rs5m to Sheikhupura, Rs2.5m to Pndi Bhattian and Rs5m to Hafizabad bar associations, respectively.

This grant will help the bar associations launch several key projects aimed at improving facilities and supporting the professional growth of lawyers. These projects include the construction of female bar rooms, the establishment of e-libraries, building of executive rooms, and purchase of important resources such as books, computers, and furniture,` said a handout issued on Tuesday after the meeting of Punjab Law Minister Malik Sohaib Ahmad Bharth with the presidents and general secretaries of these bar associations.

Among those present in the meeting were Munir Ahmad Bhatti, President of Lahore Bar, Sajad Baqar Dogar, President of Sheikhupura Bar, Babar Zaman Gujjar, President of Ferozewala Bar, Omar Khizr, President of Hafizabad Bar and Sanaullah Bhatti President of Pandhi Bhattian Bar. Punjab Law Secretary Bilal Ahmad Lodhi was also present.

During the meeting, Law Minister Malik Sohaib Ahmad Bharth stressed the government`s commitment to resolving the issues faced by lawyers. He said the Punjab government was working hard to provide continuous support for the welfare of lawyers.

He said training programmes, the creation of daycare centres for female lawyers and other important concerns of the legal community would be addressed.-Staff Reporter
