KARACHI: Mir Rasul Bakhsh Talpur has resigned as the Governor of Sind. He announced the resignation at a hurriedlycalled Press conference in Karachi.

Simultaneously, Mr Talpur said, he was forwarding his letter of resignation to the President. He told the surprised newsmen that the Press statement he was reading out to them should be treated as resignation. `I am sending a copy of this statement to the President. Meanwhile, I am packing, will vacate the Governor`s House today and shift to my brother`s house,` he added.

In a voice charged with emotion he swore on the Holy Quran ... that he would relentlessly fight for the people`s cause. ... Asked whether he was mindful of the consequences, Mr Talpur shrugged his shoulders and said: `We have seen many others. I am not worried.` Mr Talpur, however, said that he would remain in the People`s Party.

He admitted to a newsman`s query that the immediate cause of his resignation was the `baseless, malicious and shameful allegations` made by Provincial Local Bodies Minister, Jam Sadiq Ali, against his elder brother, Mir Ali Ahmed Talpur, a PPP MNA.

Meanwhile, Begum Ra`ana Liaquat Ali Khan has been appointed the new Governor of Sind, it was officially announced. Staff Reporter
