Burdening consumers

2023-02-14
WITH the ban on polythene bags, biodegradable bags are in vogue, which is a good move. But the outlets and franchises of various brands of fast food, footwear and outfits have started capitalising on this bio-friendly change as they charge the cost of these new bags from the customers.

These bags bear the advertisements and logos of the brands. In this way, they are profiting on both counts. Unduly, customers pay for their free publicity.

This is utterly unfair and against the customers` rights.

At least, the polythene bags were free of cost for the customers. But if we make it incumbent upon the customers to bear the cost of biodegradable bags with the intention of contributing to saving ourenvironment, the onus should be on the brands to bear the cost as a compensation for the harm these very businesses cause to the environment.

Currently, they are making even more in the name of being environment-friendly.

Customers have the right to demand that the brands either stop charging for the shopping bags or remove their advertisements and logos from them.

It holds no logic for the customers to pay the price of bags meant for publicity.
