MMA’s intra-party elections next week

ISLAMABAD: An important meeting of the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA), which was rescheduled for Tuesday due to the election of Senate chairman and deputy chairman on Monday, will now be held on March 20 in Karachi where its president and other office-bearers will be elected.

The meeting originally planned for Monday had to be rescheduled due to unavailability of Jamaat-i-Islami chief Senator Sirajul Haq and Jamiat Ulema Islam-F chief Maulana Fazalur Rehman besides other leaders who were busy on the day of Senate election.

The Tuesday meeting was cut short due to the demise of the sister of Pir Akram Shah, central leader of Jamiat Ulema Pakistan’s Shah Owais Noorani group. Also, Senator Sajid Mir, chairman of Markazi Jamiat Ahl-i-Hadis, was busy due to his commitments related to Imam-i-Ka’aba who was visiting the country.

A senior member of the MMA’s executive body says there are differences between the JI and the JUP’s Owais Noorani group over the slot of secretary general, while the JUI-F wants to have the post of party’s president.
