Govt contests reports of deaths from anti-measles vaccine

KARACHI: The Sindh government on Tuesday issued a handout to contest widely published reports about death of four children after they were given anti-measles vaccine by ateam of health workers during its house-to-house visit in Nawabshah on March 4.

The handout, issued by the information department, described the reports as `totally wrong/ false and baseless`, and denied that any suchdeaths had happened.

TheShaheedBenazirabad (formerly Nawabshah) district health officer, coordinator National Programme for LHWs, a lady worker and her supervisor were booked on the complaint of close relatives of three children, who died apparentlyafter receiving the vaccine.

The health department has instituted an inquiry into the allegation that the vaccine administered to the five children was either spurious or turned invalid.

The findings of the inquiry are yet to be finalised and made public.
