KARACHl: A passer-by was killed and another injured when a sports utility vehicle (SUV) hit them in Gulshan-i-lqbal on Sunday evening, police and rescuers said.

The incident angered locals, who beat the driver responsible for the accident and set his Toyota Fortuner on fire.

The police said that the vehicle gutted completely by the time firefighters arrived at the scene.

Gulshan-i-lqbal SHO Mohammed Naeem Rajput told Dawn that the SUV driver hit some passers-by near Maskan Chowrangi, causing critical injuries to at least two of them.

They were taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where doctors pronounced one of them dead on arrival.

Police Surgeon Dr Summaiya Syed told Dawn that the identity of the deceased could not be ascertained immediately. She said he was in his early 20s. The injured man was identified as Zeeshan Saleem, 42, and he was admitted for treatment.

CCTV footage that went viral on social media showed enraged people beating the driver and damaging the car before setting it on fire.

The area SHO said that the driver was arrested. He said two other persons were also taken into custody.
