Competition to arm India

2014-05-14
NEW YORK: An intense competition is on between the Soviet Union and the United States to build up India`s military potentialities in order to make her a bulwark against China in A sia. Recent reports in the American Press indicate that Russians and Americans are virtually engaged in a race to curry India`s favour by massive military assistance.

This week the `Baltimore Sun` and `New York Times` have reported with a bit of disappointment that since the Chinese `invasion` of India in 1962 Russia has given more military aid than the United States. Figures deliberately leaked by Indian officials indicate that the Soviet Union had so far supplied military hardware to India valued at some 130 million dollars against some 110 million given by the US. India is also said to have received some prototype air-to-air missiles from Russia.

Pakistani observers here believe that India has chosen to leak the quality and quantity of Russian military aid to demonstrate that the Russians were [getting] the better of the Americans in supplying military aid to India.
