Held Kashmir continues to simmer as strike extended

SRINAGAR: Routine life remained badly affected for the fifth consecutive day on Wednesday in Indiaheld Kashmir due to a shutdown called by local groups in protest against the deaths of protesters in clashes with Indian security personnel.

The anti-India groups extended the shutdownby two more days until Friday.

Shops and business establishments remained closed while public and private transport remained off the roads due to the strike.

Curfew remained in force in many parts of the disputed Himalayan region, including Pampore and Kupwara towns, while restrictions on movement of people were imposed in the rest of the areas.

The death toll from clashes between protesters and security personnel rose to 34 since the 1(illing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani on Friday, which led to protests across the region.

The chiefs of their factions of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference, Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, were detained by police after they defiedrestrictions and tried to lead protest marches.

Geelani, who was under house arrest, was arrested by police outside his residence in Hyderpora after he defied restrictions and tried to take out a march to commemorate the 85th anniver-sary of those who laid down their lives nghting against the ruling classes in 1931.

Police arrested Umar Farooq, who was also under house arrest, after he came out of his Nigeen residence to lead a march to the Martyrs Graveyard.-Agencies
