Family protests man`s alleged `murder` in PHP police custody

TOBA TEK SINGH: The relatives of a man allegedly killed in Punjab Highway Patrol (PHP) police custody staged a protest demonstration on Sunday outside the Jaswana PHP post in the Faisalabad`s Jarranwala Sadar police jurisdiction.

They informed reporters that Shahzad was riding his motorcycle with his three minor children when PHP personnel arrested him and his children at a checkpoint. He was severely tortured, resulting in his death. His body was allegedly dumped into a canal. They demanded the arrest of theinvolved police officers.

On the other hand, PHP spol(esperson Rizwan Virk claimed that at the Jaswana PHP post, Shahzad was stopped but he sped away on his motorcycle. He had an accident at a speed breaker, fell, and fled the scene, leaving his bil(e and children behind. Police found a polythene bag and a mobile phone on the road, which they seized.

Hashish was discovered in the bag. He likely jumped into a nearby Gogera branch canal, but despite police and Rescue 1122 divers` search efforts, his body was not located. A narcotics case was registered against him by Jarranwala Sadar police. The PHP refuted therelatives` allegations of torture leading to his death in custody.

PROTEST: Hundreds of power loom workers and activists from the Labour Qaumi Movement (LQM) and Haqooq Khalaq Party blocked traffic for two hours on Sunday in Faisalabad on Jhang Road near the Sadhar Adda industrial area, protesting against inflation, a high increase in power tariffs, and Thikriwala police`s failure to control robberies faced by power loom workers.

Addressing the protesters, LQM president Baba Latif Insari and other trade union leaders claimed that due to the manifold increase in power bills, most of the power loom factories had been closed, ren-dering thousands of workers jobless. They stated that when poor workers return home after theirfactory shifts,robbers target them during the night and steal their valuables in the Thil(riwala police station area.

They demanded that the government withdraw the recent electricity price increase and called on the Faisalabad CPO to direct Thikriwala police to protect workers from criminals. They announced that if their demands were not met, they would begin blocking roads in Faisalabad every day during the first week of September.

ROBBERY: Robbers killed a woman during a robbery in Rajana Chak 256 GB Philourlate on Saturday.

Reports said Pathani Bibi, 35, was alone in her home when two burglars forced their way into her house and attempted to snatch her jewelry. She resisted and raised an alarm, prompting them to overpower her and strangle her to death.

ACCIDENT: A man died after being hit by a mini truck in Faisalabad on Chak JhumraChiniot Road near Chak 103 JB Barnala.

Rescue 1122 said that Muhammad Usman, 22, was crossing the road when the accident occurred. As a result, he was critically injured and was rushed to Allied Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
