PESH AWAR: Although Gullu Butt, the name of a person from Punjab province, has become synonymous with violence recently, yet another Butt is on a mission to spread a message of peace from Khyber to Karachi.
AQ Butt, an advocate practicing in Lahore, has put his professional commitment aside for a while and decided to spread a message of peace by starting a walk from Khyber Agency. He plans a 63-day peace walk from Khyber to Karachi, stopping at different cities and meeting with people to spread message of peace.
AQ Butt, who stopped by at Peshawar Press Club on Monday morning, talked to media about his mission.
He said that he would cover some 2,000 kilometres in 63 days to promote peace. He said that his mission was self-financed and had the simple goal of spreading a message of peace just by interacting with people on the way and telling them about resolving their issuesthrough negotiations rather than by use of gun or violence.
`I am no scholar. I have no means to spread this message on a massive scale. I am just a common Pakistani, who wants to spread the message of peace,` Mr Butt said when asked if the one-man peace walk would make any difference when sit-ins and even violent protests on many political and social issues had not been as effective as those should be in the country in the recent months.
Mr Butt said that a peace walk was all he could manage as a common man within his financial means and that`s what he would do as he believed that such small initiatives could also bring big changes.
The Lahore-based lawyer has also taken part in a three-day100 kilometres walk in Swat valley in 2013 where military fought against militants few years ago.
`My family was with me during that peace walk and had supported me always in such initlatives,` Mr Butt said.
Some rights activists also gathered at Peshawar Press Club to extend support to Mr Butt in his mission.
Zar Ali Shinwari, a rights activist, said that leaders like Mao Zedong and Mahatma Gandhi held such peace walks to create awareness among the people. `So a one man`s walk for peace is also significant as it is a voice for peace. When one man starts such a walk for a noble cause, others get inspired and follow him,` he said.
Mr Shinwari appreciated the initiative for peace and Mr Butt for stopping by at Peshawar, a city affected by violence in the recent years.
