Ex players, fans disappointed but proud after final loss

LAHORE: Pakistan`s five-wicket loss to England in the T20 World Cup final on Sunday saw former cricketers react to it with differing opinions.

While the public sentiment was more about supporting the Pakistan side which `gave it all` in the run to the final of the event which the team started with losses against arch-rivals India and minnows Zimbabwe, former captain Misbah-ulHaq did not resist being critical.

Misbah, who has also served as Pakistan`s chief selector and coach, believed Babar Azam and co. were burdened by the pressure of the big occasion, which affected the execution of their plans.

`When you play such a high profile game you have to assess all your positive and negative resources quickly to make the right decisions at the right time,` Misbah said while speaking on a television talk show after the match.

`Once you make any delay in taking the right decision, you will not get a chance to catch the moment back.

The 48-year-old believed Pakistan`s total of 137 was too less to challenge a strong England batting line-up and pace spearhead`s Shaheen Shah Afridi`s injury in the 15th over of the match hurt the side further.

Misbah`s former team-mate Mohammad Hafeez, on the other hand, expressed pride over Pakistan`s performance in the World Cup. `We love u & proud of u all team Pakistan. We should all be proud of the incredible journey to get to the final. U guys inspired many with ur resilience & team unity.

Thank u team Pakistan for lovely & amazing memories, Hafeez tweeted.

Meanwhile, a crowd of around 10,000 turned up to the National Hockey Stadium here to watch the final on the big screen.

The crowd cheered each run and wicket that came in favour of Pakistan but the wave of excitement that lit up the venue eventually ende d in despair.

`At least our bowlers were not treated by the English batters like they did with the Indian bowlers in the semi-final,` a young fan said. `We could have won the World Cup if our batters would have performed better to set a good total for England.`-Sports Reporter
