LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) has been asked to set the minimum wage at $1,000 across all provinces in Pakistan to help eradicate poverty.
Fehmeed Nawaz Ansari, a lawyer from Faisalabad, filed a writ petition in the LHC, noting that Pakistan was a British colonybeforeindependence and adopted most British laws, including the justice system.
In his two-page petition, the lawyer argues that wages in Pakistan should also be on par with those in the United Statesand United Kingdom.
He contends that a minimum wage of $1,000 per month would increase citizens` purchasing power, which, in turn, would attract foreign investment to the country.
The petition further claims that this increase could grow the country`s economy to between $1,000 and $1,200 billion.
The petitioner requested the court to grant his plea and order the government to raise the minimum wage to $1,000 nationwide.Staff Reporter
