PA adopts resolution on family planning implementation

LAHORE: The Punjab Assembly on Tuesday unanimously adopted a resolution demanding immediate implementation of family planning and launching an awareness and education campaign in view of the problems of the growing population.

The population of Punjab is increasing very rapidly posing a great threat to the resources of the province, reads text of the resolution tabled by MPAs Sher Ali Khan, Mumtaz Begum, Ayesha Javed and Zulfiqar Ali.

Punjab is already facing problems in the education and health, housing, sectors and access to basic facilities, nutrition etc., it says, adding it is essentialthatstandard of living and rights of everycitizen are taken care of.

The increase in populationis a major reason for the failure to provide a better life, equal access to resources and opportunities for sustainable development, the resolution says, calling for immediately implementing family planning to control population.

In view of the increasing population, an awareness and education campaign should be launched, and it should be ensured that family planning facilities are easily accessible to all citizens, it concludes.

Earlier, Deputy Speaker Zaheer Iqbal Channar, who was chairing the sitting, paid tribute to British Junior Squash champion Suhail Adnan, who visited the assembly on Tuesday.

Mr Channar also announced a Rs5m prize for the champion belonging to Bahawalpur.
