2,000 policemen deployed for Lakki polio drive

LAKKI MARWAT: Over 2,000 policemen have been deployed for security of vaccinators during the ongoing anti-polio drive, which began in Lakki Marwat district on Monday, an official said on Tuesday.
He said the police had made foolproof security arrangements for the campaign, which would end on Friday.
He said police would provide security to 902 mobile, 53 fixed, 34 transit and 11 roaming teams during the campaign. He said plainclothes policemen and police commandos had been deployed at sensitive places to avert any untoward incident. He said the police had also increased snap checking and patrolling to thwart any possible act of sabotage by anti-social elements.
Meanwhile, district police officer Ziauddin Ahmed paid a visit to hospitals and other health facilities to check security arrange-ments for the polio teams.
He directed policemen to wear bullet-proof jackets and helmets and implement security standard operating procedures in letter and spirit.
Meanwhile, Bannu deputy commissioner Aun Haidar Gondal along with DPO Dr Mohammad Iqbal and army officials inspected security arrangements for polio teams during visits to basic health units.
In a separate development, the provincial government appointed Dr Ishfaq as the district coordinator of the Expanded Programme on Immunisation in Lakki Marwat.
An official said on Tuesday Dr Ishfaq was already attached to the district health office and was the focal person for polio eradication initiative (PEI).

He said he shifted his wounded brother to the District Headquarters Hospital, Tajazai, wherefrom he was referred to Khalifa Gul Nawaz Hospital in Bannu, where he succumbed to injuries. Correspondent
