LAHORE: The Lahore High Court on Friday expressed dissatisfaction over the flow of traffic and emphasised the need to reduce traffic congestion in the provincial metropolis.
Justice Shahid Karim was hearing several public interest petitions regarding the lack of effective measures for smog prevention.
A member of the judicial commission informed the court about a meeting with the chief traffic officer, saying the roads were closed for 11 minutes for cricket teams` movement in the city.
The judge noted that diversion signs should be placed on The Mall at least where traffic was blocked. He stressed the need for measures to reduce traffic volume, stating that controlling it otherwise would be nearly impossible.
To combat environmental pollution, Justice Karim suggested increasing tree plantation efforts during the current spring season. He also barred the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) from approving building plans without incorporating water recycling designs.
The judge further ordered the LDA to issue notices to private housing societies to prevent car washing at homes. He remarked that the government should make the private housing sector aware of its responsibility to conserve groundwater.
He highlighted the need for a media awareness campaigns on water conservation.
A member of the judicial commission suggested preventing water wastage during construction activities as well.
Justice Karim observed that afforestation needed on 6,000 acres of land of the forest department transferred to the Ravi Urban Development Authority (Ruda). He also recommended that the area be developed as a recreational site for public visits.
The judge adjourned the hearing on the petitions till Feb 21. Staff Reporter
