LAHORE: In a controversial move, the Punjab Directorate of Public Instructions (DPI-Colleges) on Friday banned funfairs and sports galas in all public and private colleges of the province, terming such extracurricular activities `unethical` and `vulgar`.

The DPI, Dr Syed Ansar Azhar, issued a strict directive on March 12 to all public and private colleges in the Lahore Division and rest of Punjab to immediately cease any activities deemed `unethical or vulgar`.

The decision was taken in response to concerns raised by the higher education department secretary regarding certain events, including funfairs and sports galas, where students and teachers were observed dancing to Indian songs. He said educational institutions are `sacred` spaces meant for imparting quality education and such conduct violates their sanctity.

The directive states that such activities undermine the sanctity of these institutions and must be stopped immediately.

The notice directs all directors of education (colleges) in the Lahore Division to ensure compliance of this order. It warns that any negligence in enforcing the ban will result in strict disciplinary action against the concerned principals, deputy directors, and directors of education.

The move has sparked a debate among educators and students, with some supporting the move, while others arguing that cultural and recreational activities are essential for a well-rounded education.

The ban follows a recent event at the Khwaja Fareed Government Postgraduate College, Rahim Yar Khan, where a teacher danced with girl students and showered currency notes on them during Qawwali night. Staff Reporter
