QUETTA: A three-day polio immunisation campaign will kick off on Monday (today) in 30 districts of the province amid tight security.

According to the Coordinator of the Emergency Operation Centre, Balochistan, Syed Faisal Ahmed, all arrangement have been completed and they were aiming to inoculate around 240,000 children along with vitamin A drops.

The coordinator explained that this time around 9,700 teams would be participating in the drive, including 8,234 mobile teams, 870 fixed site teams and around 600 transit point teams.

He said that all security arrangements had been made and health workers and other staff involved in the campaign would be protected at all times. He added that all law enforcement agencies would be deployed for security purposes.

`A group of paramedics is on strike but other than that everyone else is ready to take part in the campaign,` he said, adding that polio cases in the country had decreased and only one case each was reported from Gilgit-Baltistan and Punjab with none from Balochistan this year.

`It is important to have the anti-polio drive now as many families are travelling from warmer regions of the country to Balochistan,` he said, adding that teams at transit points would be given special attention.

Mr Ahmed said that along with the polio drops, vaccinating children against other diseases was also necessary as it would improve their immune systems.
