PPP nominates Arsalan Shaikh as Sukkur mayor

SUKKUR: Jubilant activists and supporters of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) marched through the streets of Sukkur when the party high command announced the names of Arsalan Islam Shaikh and Tariq Chauhan for the slots of the mayor and deputy mayor, respectively, of the Sukkur Municipal Corporation.
Mr Shaikh is the son PPP Senator Islamuddin Shaikh, whose elder son, Noman Islam Shaikh, is an MNA.
The PPP leadership has also announced the names of Mohammed Aslam Shaikh and Akhtar Mahar as the chairman and vice chairman, respectively, of the Sukkur District Council.
A local PPP leader, Abdul Khalig Mirani, led a big rally which was taken out from the Bachal Shah Miani area and after passing through various roads, it made a stopover outside the residence of Tariq Chohan and ended outside Sukkur House, the residence of Arsalan Shaikh.
Speaking to the participants, Mr Mirani said PPP chairman Bilawal BhuttoZardari and co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari took the decisions as per the aspirations of the people of Sukkur district.
Oath-taking ceremony A total of 36 councillors from Rohri and Sukkur who were elected on reserved seats of Sukkur district council took their oath at a ceremony held on Tuesday.
First Senior Civil Judge of Sukkur Amjad Soomro administered the oath.
Eleven of the new members have been elected on seats for women and two each for labour, minorities and youths.
Meanwhile, 12 councillors elected on reserved seats of Sukkur Municipal Corporation also took the oath on Tuesday. First Civil Judge of Sukkur Rashid Dayo administered the oath.
