KARACHI: The crucial Government-labour talks broke down following a brief meeting of the labour leaders with the Provincial Governor last evening [June 14]. In fact, the meeting lasted just for five minutes. The grim-faced labour leaders later announced that no agreement could be reached as the Government had taken a very stiff stand. The governor, Mir Rasool Bakhsh Talpur, however, indicated that the Government was willing to go to a reasonable extent but would maintain law and order as well as industrial peace and productivity, at all costs.
Meanwhile, the strike in the industrial areas entered the seventh day today, and about 1,000 industrial units at SITE, Landhi and Korangi units remaine d idle. The labourers have remained peaceful and have continued their struggle in a disciplined manner. Mr Nabi Ahmed, General Secretary, Pakistan Workers` Federation, who acted as a spokesman of the labour leaders, told newsmen that they tried their best to reach an amicable settlement but the Government failed to respond positively.
