2015-07-15
WASHINGTON: A reappraisal of American economic and military aid to Pakistan is said to be under way at the request of President Johnson.

This is believed to have been one factor behind his suggestion that Aid to Pakistan Consortium`s formal meeting due for July 27 be put off until the end of September. It may be recalled that Pakistan`s independent foreign policy, especially relations with China, have been viewed with increasing concern by Washington. Quite recently, during foreign aid hearings in the Congress, top US of ficialsof the State Department and the AID stated that Pakistan`s ties with China might affect the US relationship with Pakistan. Correspondent [Meanwhile, as reported by our Special Representative from Rawalpindi] a resolution deploring the postponement of the World Bank Consortium meeting for aid to Pakistan by two months was unanimously adopted at the meeting of the Pakistan Muslim League Council today [July 14]. The Resolution called upon the World Bank and the members of the Consortium, including the United States, to uphold the principles of non-political nature of economic co-operation and assistance. It appealed to the people of Pakistan to rally round the Government in its determination to safeguard the sovereignty, dignity and honour of the country and to be prepared to meet whatever challenge Pakistan might be called upon to face.

The Council expressed its confidence that people would rise to the occasion and demonstrate to the world not only their ability, but also their willingness, to make sacrifices for the consolidation and prosperity of the nation. By another resolution, the Council appreciated the leadership of President Ayub in reaching an agreement on Rann of Kutch, leading to ceasefire and general relaxation of tension between Pakistan and India.
