2014-11-15
NEW DELHI: The Central Assembly today [Nov 14] discussed official Bills. During questionhour the War Transport Member, Sir Edward Bentall was asked a number of supplementary questions about the administration of State railway in India. From the Muslim League Party, [there were] a number of questions about the inadequate representation of Muslims on the Bengal and Assam Railways. The corruption prevailing all over the railways in the country was also brought to the notice of the Railway Member. Members told Sir Edward that for reservation of seats they had to pay from Rs. 5 to Rs. 10 to the clerks on the platforms. As regards the rush in the trains, the whole responsibility was put on the administration. If the trains were running crowded, some of the members asked why the railway sold tickets at all. Instruction from one station to another could very easily be sent not to sell tickets when there is no accommodation.

Mr. Sri Prakash wanted that the Railways should give up the use of the word `female` on the compartments or the platforms. He said that it was wrongly used for women, who are human beings and not female species.
