Senior journalist laid to rest

RAWALPINDI: Senior journalist and trade unionist Habibur Rehman was laid to rest at Dhoke Ellahi Bux graveyard on Tuesday. Rehman passed away after a protracted illness in Peshawar on Monday.

His body was brought to Rawalpindi where he was buried next to his father.

Habibur Rehman was a close associate of trade unionists Minhaj Barna and Nisar Usmani, and even remained behind bars in Karachi during Ziaul Haq`s martial law.

Born in the Indian city of Ambala in 1940, Rehman migrated to Pakistan along with his family in 1947 and settied in Rawalpindi.

After completing his masters in Urdu, he started journalIsm in 1959 from Daily Naqoos, Rawalpindi. He also worked for daily Mashrig, Tajir and Tameer. He remained associated with Radio Pakistan and PTV and hosted a current affairs programme.

He was the elder brother of senior journalist Hafiz Tahir Khalil, SP Hafiz Amir Khalil and Hafiz S.A. Rehman Advocate of the Supreme Court. He left behind a son and three daughters.

His funeral prayers were offered at Liaquat Bagh which were attended by a large number of journalists and politicians including Senate Chairman Mian Raza Rabbani, AML President Sheikh Rashid Ahmed, former PML-N MNAs Hanif Abbasi and Malik Shakil Awan, Council of Islamic Ideology member Khursheed Nadeem, Press Information Officer (PIO) Saleem Ahmed, police officers and local administration officials. A Reporter
