`MQM hitman` among 11 indicted in police bus attack case

KARACHI: An antiterrorism court on Tuesday indicted 11 accused, including an alleged hitman belonging to the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), in a seven-year-old case pertaining to an armed attack on a bus carrying policemen in Chakra Goth, Karachi.

The accused, including Raees, alias Mama; Imran, alias Lamba; Inamul Hag; Raheel; Asif Iqbal and Umer Javed, have been charged with killing four people, including three policemen, and wounding 30 others aboard a bus carrying policemen on the night of Aug 19, 2011 in Korangi.

On Tuesday, the matter was fixed before the judge of the antiterrorism court concerned for indictment of the accused.

Around 11 detained accused, including Raees, Imran, Inam, Raheel, Asif, Umer and others, were produced from prison.

Thejudgereadoutthecharges to the accused. They pleaded not guilty and opted to contest the trial.

The judge, who is conducting the trial in the judicial complexinside the central prison, summoned the prosecution witnesses to record their statements on the next date and adjourned the hearing.

Meanwhile, the court separated the case of five absconding suspect s, including the former incharge of the MQM`s Karachi Tanzeemi Committee Hammad Siddiqui, who had been declared proclaimed offenders in the present case.

According to the prosecution, three policemen and another person were killed and 30 others wounded in the bus attack carried out by a group of 15 to 20 gunmen riding motorbikes in Korangi.

The police charge-sheeted around 11 detained accused and some of their accomplices were shown as absconders.

Two accused, Shahid and Asif Chaman, were killed in the retaliatory fire, it added.

The prosecution claimed that the detained accused Raees, a former sector in-charge of the MQM, was involved in the attack carried out in order to spread terror and maintain his hold on Korangi.

It claimed that accused Raees had confessed to his involvementin the assault on the law enforcers allegedly on the directives of former KTC in-charge Hammad Siddiqui, adding that during an identification parade conducted by a judicial magistrate eyewitnesses had also rightly identified Raees as one of the main accused.

A case was registered at the Zaman Town police station under relevant sections of the law.

Suspect granted bail in `false` armed robbery case An antiterrorism court has granted bail to an accused allegedly implicated in a `false` armed robbery case and terrorism case.

The suspect, Waseem Abbas, has been charged with committing an armed house robbery on Nov 28 and encounter with police in Surjani Town.

The case took an interesting turn in the last hearing when the complainant denied lodging any case against the detained accused.

The ATC-H judge pronounced her judgement reserved earlier.

The judge granted post-arrest bail to the applicant against a suretyof Rs50,000andadjourned the hearing.
