Man jailed for 11 years in illicit weapon, encounter cases

KARACHI: An antiterrorism court has handed down a collective sentence of 11-year imprisonment to a man in cases pertaining to encounter with police and possessing illicit weapon.
Mohammad Ismail alias Asmatullah was found guilty of attacking policemen with intention to kill them with an unlicensed weapon and causing terror within the jurisdiction of the Sohrab Goth police station in Sept 2020.
On Friday, the ATC-XX judge, who conducted the trial in the judicial complex inside the central prison, pronounced his verdict reserved after recording evidence and final arguments from both sides.
The judge noted that the prosecution successfully proved the charge against the accused.
State prosecutor Iqbal Meo Rajput submitted that a police party during routine patrolling spotted three motorcyclists on thenight of Sept 20, 2020.
He added that upon seeing police the motorcyclists started firing and during the crossfire Mohammad Ismail and Feroz were arrested in injured condition. Their third accomplice Amir Khan managed to flee, he added.
The prosecutor claimed that an unlicensed pistol and three cell phones were recovered f rom his possession. One of the suspects, Feroz, had died during treatment at the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.
The prosecutor claimed that the recovered articles and weapon and other evidence established his role and pleaded to punish him according to the law.
On the other hand, defence counsel Muzafar Hussain Solangi denied the allegations of the prosecution and pleaded innocence on behalf of his client, arguing that the police had f r ame d him in a false case. He asked the court to acquit him.
A case was registered at the Sohrab Goth police station on behalf of the state.
