Reviving the charm of Mall Road in Lahore

2025-02-16
ON a recent visit to The Mall, also known as the Mall Road, I was dismayed to observe the deteriorating condition of Lahore`s iconic landmark. Once a symbol of grandeur and the heart of our city, it now languishes in a state of disrepair, a shadow of its former self. The neglect is painfully evident, from the crumbling infrastructure and poorly maintained pavements to the chaotic traffic and encroaching commercialism that has eroded the historical character ofthe road.

The Mall was once the natural central business district, a hub of commerce, culture and social interaction. Sadly, this vibrant spirit has been systematically diminished over the years. The current situation is detrimental to Lahore in several ways. It is a tragic loss of our heritage. The dilapidated infrastructure poses a safety risk to pedestrians and commuters alike. The uneven pavements, inadequate lighting, and chaotic traffic create a hazardous environment.

The decline of The Mall has negatively impacted its economic viability. While some commercial activity persists, it is a far cry from the bustling hub it once was.A comprehensive and coordinated effort from the relevant authorities is required as The Mall along with Anarkali is the historical central business district of Lahore. The city administration should develop a comprehensive restoration planfocussing on preserving historical architecture, improving infrastructure, and regulating traffic flow.

Clear guidelines are needed to ensure that businesses operate in a way that respects the historical significance of the area. Restoring the aesthetic appeal of The Mall is crucial. Proper landscaping, streetlighting and comfortable seating areas will encourage pedestrian activity and enhance the overall experience.

Revitalising The Mall is not merely about fixing a road; it is about reclaiming a vital part of Lahore`s identity, and reinvigorating its economic heart.

By restoring its historical and cultural beauty, we can once again revive the charm of The Mall, a place where history, culture and commerce thrive.
