AS I approached Pakistan Steel Mills, a signpost bearing the words `you are approaching the largest engineering enterprise of Pakistan` deeply saddened me.
The steel mill is no longer regarded as a pride of the country but a dilapidated, indebted and almost inactive factory fallen on very hard days.
Since my childhood, I had dreamt of visiting this engineering marvel in Pakistan. My prayers were answered in the form of an internship at the mills.
But it was not the same PSM that I used to see on TV The steel mills` main processes iron and steelmanufacturing-have been non-functional for more than a year.
Recalling its past glories, an engineer in SMD (steel-making department) told me they used to get three bonuses a year.
Now they haven`t got their salaries for the last two months.
Whatever the reasons for its downfall, administrative or corruption, the government must take measures to save and revive, the glory of Pakistan`s largest engineering industry venture.
