SUKKUR: A man shot and wounded a woman after she declined to marry him, killed her uncle and then took his own life, officials said on Friday.

The incident took place on Friday night in district Ghotki.

According to relatives of the affected family, Sonu Kumar, son of Nanak Ram, wanted to marry VandanaKumari for about a year, but he had started losing patience as her family remained reluctant to agree to his proposal.

They said that Sonu, a resident of Jacobabad, had travelled from Karachi to Khanpur Mahar town in Ghotki district on Friday and visited her home in ShahiBazaarin the evening.

Talking to the media after collecting his body from Mirpur Mathelo Hospital, Sonu`s close rela-tives, Rajesh and Ronak, claimed that during the couple`s Holi meeting, Sonu kept forcing Vandana to leave her parents to contract a free-will marriage, but she did not agree.

Failing in his desperate attempt, Sonu opened several shots at Vandana one of which hit her uncle, Chando Ram, 55, who died on the spot. The suspect then shot himself to take his own life.

The two bodies werelater transported to the Sheikh Hamadan (taluka) Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Sonu`s body was later sent to the MirpurMathelo Hospital.

Vandana Kumari was also first rushed to the taluka hospital and provided emergency treatment. She was then referred to a major hospital in Sukkur from where she was referred to another major hospital in Gambat. Her condition was stated to be critical.
