DPC threatens long march against Nato supply

Bureau Report 2012-04-16
PESHAWAR, April 15: The Difa-iPakistan Council (DPC) has rejected the resolution of parliament regarding supply to Nato forces in Afghanistan via Pakistan, saying it will hold a referendum on the issue and organise a long march to halt the supplies.

DPC would seek opinion of masses about restoration of Nato supplies and would hold a long march, Jamaatud Dawa chief Hafiz Mohammad Saeed told a rally here on Sunday.

However, he didn`t announce date for the long march. The rally entitled Difa-iPakistan Conference was held at an open ground near Peshawar-Islamabad Motorway. The DPC, a conglomerate of 42 religious and jihadi outfits, failed to draw much audience.

Maulana Samiul Haq, chairman of the council, presided over the conference.

Besides Hafiz Saeed, Lt-Gen (retired) Hamid Gul, head of the banned AhSunat Wal Jamaat, Maulana Mohammad Ahmad Ludhianvi, Jamaat-i-Islami general secretary Liaquat Baloch, Maulana Fazal Rehman Khalil and others addressed the rally.

The venue was decorated with ban-ners and flags of different parties. A lane of the Ring Road was also closed to traffic. A banner displayed near the main stage said: `The flag of Islam will be hoisted on White House (Washington) and Red Fort (New Delhi).

Hafiz Saeed, who is wanted to the US government and carries $10 million bounty on his head, said that parliament and government had repeated the mistakes of former president Gen Pervez Musharraf by allowing Nato supplies via Pakistan.

`The parliament has committed a blunder by permitting Nato supplies to Afghanistan,` he said, adding that the decision was not acceptable to the nation. He said that DPC would block Grand Trunk Road and other highways from Karachi to Torkham if supplies for Nato were restored.

`We will conduct countrywide referendum on the parliament`s decision,` he said. He said that America and its allies would prolong their stay in Afghanistan if the supply was restored. He blamed America and India for the unrest in Balochistan and Gilgit-Baltistan.

Maulana Samiul Haq announced 10point agenda. He said that DPC would continue struggle to free Pakistan fromthe slavery of America and other imperialist forces.

The 10-point agenda also include stopping drone attacks in tribal areas, suspension of supplies to Nato forces, continuation of support for Taliban in Afghanistan and protection of seminaries in the country.

A speaker denounced comments of Maulana Fazlur Rehman about DPC wherein he had described the council as `hotchpotch`. `That leader abandoned his principled stand and compromised on the ideology when he ate a feast with President Zardari,` he said.

Liaquat Baloch said that US had forced the parliament to pass the resolution. He said that Washington had categorically stated that drone attacks would continue to hit targets everywhere in Pakistan. He alleged that parliament didn`t care about its dignity and prestige in matter of Nato supplies.

However, people of Pakistan would not allow supplies to Nato forces through their territory, he added. He said that after statement of the US regarding continuation of drone attacks parliamentarians should resign. He said that DPC workers would also organise sit-ins across the country.
