LAHORE: Ghulam Muhammad, a fine arts graduate from Mariam Dawood School of Visual Arts and Design, Beaconhouse National University (BNU), has won the Jameel Art Prize 4, the biennial award for contemporary art and design inspired by Islamic tradition, says a press release.
Ghulam Muhammad , now a faculty member at BNU, is the youngest artist and first Pakistani to have received this accolade for his five works of paper collage (four untitled and one with the title Gunjaan). The art work by GM has been made by cutting individual words in Urdu and reconstructing them to create a new image, add-ing gold and silver leaf and ink.
The ceremony was held at the Pera Museum in Istanbul, Turkey, where his award-winning work will be on display till Aug 14 before being sent for an international tour.
This year, over 280 nominations were received from various countries for the 4th edition of Jameel Art Prize. As many as 11 artists were shortlisted for this award including Ghulam Muhammad and another former faculty member of BNU, David Chalmers Alesworth.
The winner was announced on June 7, 2016. Ayse and Ece Ege, founders of Turkish fashion label Dice Kayek and winners of JameelPrize 3, presented GM with the prize.
Organised by London`s Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A), in partnership with Art Jameel, the Jameel Prize aims to develop cultural links around the world and promote cultural understanding. It tends to explore the relationship between Islamic traditions of art, craft and design and contemporary work as part of a wider debate about Islamic culture and its role today. The Jameel Prize worth £25,000 was first awarded in 2009 and is held every two years, when work by the finalists is shown in an international touring exhibition. Staff Reporter
