THE escalating inter-cartel violence over drug money and `territorial` disputes in the Old Golimar of Karachi is alarming. What is even more alarming is the fact that the matter has stopped making the cut as far as news headlines go. By whatever yardstick the national media assess the news worthiness of an incident or issue, it needstoberedehned.
The prevailing situation has not only affected the safety and wellbeing of the residents, but has also resulted in the loss of innocent lives due to the involvement of corrupt elements of various law-enforcement agencies.
The rampant drug trade and violence perpetrated by criminal cartels have plagued the community for far too long, leaving the people feeling vulnerable and hopeless.
The pervasive influence of illegal drugs has not only ruined the lives of a whole lot of young individuals, but has also contributed to a culture of fear and insecurity among area residents.
Moreover, corruption within the law-enforcement mechanism has exacerbated the problem. When those responsible for maintaining law and order get involved in illegal activities or turn a blind eye to criminal activities, it undermines the faith that citizens place in the justice system. Innocent civilians have tragically lost their lives in various incidents of crossfire during cartel violence, further increasing the sense of injustice and despair.
The relevant authorities should take immediate and decisive action against drug trafficking and cartel violence in Old Golimar. They should conduct thoroughinvestigationsinto corruption within the law-enforcement agencies and hold those who are responsible accountable for their actions.
The provincial government should allocate more resources to community-based programmes that may provide support and rehabilitation to individuals affected by the menace of drug addiction. Long-term solutions must be implemented to address the root causes of drug abuse, and to break the cycle of violence that has gripped the entire area.
On its part, the national media should really revisit its professional parameters that decide what is news and what is not.
Beyond giving due coverage to the worsening situation on the ground, the media needs to play an active role in raising mass awareness on the matter that may encourage a constructive dialogue in society about finding lasting solutions.
Together, as a united community, we can strive for a safer and more prosperous Old Golimar area. Let us all work together to ensure that justice prevailsin society and thatthe area may regain its status of being home to a peaceful and prosperous community.
