Circular debt

2015-10-16
WE hear every day about the staggering amount of the circular debt in the power sector. The ultimate victims are the domestic households and the common man, because it is they who have to pay for the misdeeds of the authorities and the big fish called the elite.

Currently the debt stands at Rs663bn of which Rs 250bn is outstanding against the departments of the federal and provincial governments and almost a similar sum is due from private businesses in the form of subsidies.

It is the government`s inability to pay their bills or to make the big fish pay their dues that make it necessary to constantly increase the price of electricity for all.

Ultimately, the common citizen is forced to pay.

Technically, electricity prices should be increased or the subsidy removed only for government departments and private big businesses, because they are the oneswho are responsible for this situation and not the common citizen.

In other words, domestic households do not generate revenue by consuming electricity, as is the case with private businesses and the government.
