Bid to abduct doctor claims his colleague`s life

LANDI KOTAL: A senior doctor of the agency headquarters hospital here was injured and a colleague of his was killed when they resisted an attempt by armed men to abduct the doctor who was coming from across the Torkham border in Afghanistan on Sunday evening.

Sources at the Landi Kotal hospital said that Dr Zar Alam was coming back from his private clinic in Marko district of Nangrahar province of Afghanistan when some unidentified gunmen tried to kidnap him after robbing him of his mobile phone and money.

They said that during the scuffle, the armed men opened fire at Dr Alam and an Afghan man, who was accompanying him. The firing resulted in injuries to both the doctor and his companion. Later, the Afghan national died in a hospital in Jalalabad, while Zar Alam was brought to Landi Kotal hospital.

C O M P L A I N T S ADDRESSED: The Khyber Agency political administration has disposed of eight out of a total of 21 complaints it received during the last one month through the newly-established computerised grievances redressal system.

The system was introduced on November 10 by political agent Shahab Ali Shah with the aim to encourage ordinary tribesmen to register their complaints against any government official or department in Khyber Agency in order to improve the efficiency of his administration.

The tribesmen were also advised to give suitable suggestions regarding improvement in governance alongside registering their complaints through toll-free number, fax or email.-Correspondent
