LOS ANGELES: An iconic Hollywood studio lot and the golden sands of Venice Beach are among an array of Los Angeles landmarks that will stage events for the 2028 Olympic Games, organisers said Tuesday.

In an updated list of venues for the Games, LA28 confirmed venues for surfing, triathlon, baseball, cricket and squash amongst other sports.

Universal Studios will play host to squash`s Olympic debut, with the sport taking place on Courthouse Square the mock-up town square featured prominently in Oscar-winning movies such as `Back to the Future` and `To Kill a Mockingbird`.

Venice Beach meanwhile will host the triathlon relocating from its initial venue in Long Beach and will also be the starting point for the men`s and women`s marathon, as well as the cycling road races.

LA28 organisers also confirmed that cricket which is making its return to the Olympics for the first time in more than a century will be held at a purpose-built venue at Pomona, just east of Los Angeles. Earlier reports had suggested cricket could have been staged thousands of miles from Los Angeles in New York.

The venue for surfing was also confirmed, with the competition taking place at Trestles Beach in the coastal town of San Clemente, roughly 61 miles (98 kilometers) from Los Angeles.

Trestles is widely considered to be one of the best surfing locations in California, known for consistent waves and a classic point break.

The competition will be sprawled out around the greater Los Angeles region, with beach volleyball enjoying surf-side digs at Alamitos Beach and Anaheim`s Honda Center hosting volleyball.

Boxing returns to the Olympic lineup in 2028 with early rounds set for the Peacock Theatre and finals taking place at the Arena in downtown Los Angeles.

Baseball will take place at Dodger Stadium, the home of the Los Angeles Dodgers, which also hosted the sport at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.

`We`ve promised the world an incredible Olympic Games and today we`re proud to share the plan that will make it happen,` LA28 chief executive Reynold Hoover said in a statement.

`The 2028 Olympic venue plan invites communities from across the region to celebrate the Games coming to their backyard with the most exciting sports staged at some of the world`s top-tier existing stadiums and arenas, famous beaches and purposebuilt temporary structures.

Los Angeles mayor Karen Bass said the venue plan announced on Tuesday would `bring the Games to all corners of our city like never before`.

`From the Sepulveda Basin to the iconic shores of Venice Beach, our world-famous neighborhoods as well as our hidden gems will be on full display for all to experience and enjoy,` Bass said.

Other event venues announced on Tuesday include horse racing`s Santa Anita Park, which will hostthe equestrian events.

VENUE DECISIONS WELCOMED Cricket, one of the five new sports in Los Angeles, will return to the Olympics after 128 years, featuring six teams each in the men`s and women`s competition in the 20-overs format.

International Cricket Council chairman Jay Shah was pleased with the venue a temporary stadium at the Fairgrounds in Pomona named by the organisers on Tuesday.

`Although cricket is a hugely popular sport, it will be a fantastic opportunity to expand traditional boundaries when it features in the Olympics in the fast-paced, exciting T20 format that should appeal to new audiences,` Shah said in a statement.

International Surfing Association President Fernando Aguerre applauded the selection of Trestles Beach, with its high-performance waves, as a `prime venue` for elite surfers.

The venue puts the competition roughly 65 miles south of Los Angeles, an easy commute after the 2024 Paris Games that saw their surfing competition held in Teahupo`o, Tahiti.

`We knew that any solution for LA had to feature the best performance waves, and there is no doubt that location is Trestles,` Aguerre said in a statement.

The International Shooting Sport Federation welcomed the sport`s return to the `heart of the Olympic experience` after being held away from the main venue in Paris last year.

The shooting events at the 2024 Games were staged 270km from Paris in Chateauroux, with current ISSF President Luciano Rossi saying it was `a big mistake` by his federation predecessors to accept that venue.

The Italian also vowed to lobby the International Olympic Committee to ensure shooting was staged within the host city only in 2028.

Olympic organisers announced the venues on Tuesday, with target shooting to take place in a temporary indoor range in Long Beach while the shotgun events will be held at the LA Clays Shooting Sports Park in El Monte both in LA County.

`With determined efforts from my ISSF colleagues, and thanks to excellent co-operation with LA28 and the IOC, our shooting athletes will get the full Olympic Games experience and be at the heart of the action,` Rossi said in a statement.-Agencies
