LAKKI MARWAT: After a road accident claimed 10 lives on Tuesday, the Karak district administration has swung into action to ensure safe vehicular movement on the Indus Highway.
During a high-level meeting chaired by deputy commissioner Shakeel Ahmad Jan on Wednesday, the participants discussed the ongoing work on sections of the main artery connecting Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with other parts of the country, with a focus on linking bridges with the highway through approach roads to improve traffic flow and minimise accidents.
District police officer Shahbaz Elahi, assistant commissioner Ahmad Mughees and officials of the National Highway Authority and tehsil municipal administration were in attendance.
The deputy commissioner formed a committee to identify a suitable place for the installation of a vehicle weighing scale on the busy highway within 15 days.
He directed NHA and municipal officials to ensure early instal-lation of traffic signboards and identify U-turns to facilitate transporters and avert occurrence of accidents. The DC also ordered beautification of medians at major intersections and increased police presence on the Peshawar-Karachi Highway.
`The police and NHA officials must focus on enhancing road safety and effective implementation of traffic rules and regulations,` he said.
Also in the day, Mr Shakeel, along with DPO Shahbaz Elahi, inaugurated an anti-polio campaign by vaccinating children under five years of age in his office in Karak city.
District health authorities, local body members and officials of partner organisations were also present.
The deputy commissioner urged parents to immunise their children against polio and said the vaccine was safe for human life.
He said children in Pakistan were at risk due to their parents` reluctance and refusal to vaccinate them. Correspondent
