THIS refers to your news report `Four killed as chairlift falls into Indus` (May 13). Although it is a tragic incident, it is not the only chairlift in Gilgit-Baltistan. When we visit far-off areas in the province, we find many chairlifts which serve as the only means which connects villages with the rest of the country.
People use these chairlifts risking their lives as they have no other option. The rest of the world is using modern technology but we are still living in the age of suspension bridges. Moreover, the National Highway Authority (NHA) has rejected the suggestion for building reinforced cement concrete bridges that should be built on Gilgit-Skardu Road, replacing suspension bridges.
Instead of adopting modern and long-term strategies, the NHA is pushing us again to the age ofsuspension bridges.
