Overcoming loadshedding

2017-05-17
THE government despite its tall claim has not yet been successful in bridging the gap between demand and supply, which has gone up to over 7,000 MW. In our day-today life, we should switch off the light and other appliances when they are not needed.

Businesses dealing in garments, home appliances, jewellery and other similar consumer-based commodities use extravagantlights attheir shops. This practice causes waste of light.

Here are some suggestions to help overcome loadshedding. A culture of energy audit should be promoted for industrial, commercial and domestic consumers of electricity. Line losses should be controlled through the replacement of existing old transmission lines with heavy load-bearing new ones.

Special effort should be made to produce alternative energy sourceslike solar, wind-based, geo-thermal, molten salt, coal and biogas-based energy plants. All consumers should be encouraged to produce their own electricity through any of the aforementioned sources and sell their excess electricity to the government through two-way meters.

Special incentives in taxes and duties should be announced in the next budget for those production units which are self-sufficient in their electricity needs.
