PESHAWAR: Participants at a dialogue here on Tuesday stressed the need for taking drastic steps to change the prevalling political system to ensure economic empowerment of the masses.
The event `titled `new social contract, a need` was organised by Progressive Democratic Alliance, a group of political parties.
Noted among those who spolce on the occasion included social activist Marvi Sarmad, National Party leader Syed Mukhtiar Bacha, Awami Workers Party spokesman Shakeel Waheedullah Khan, Mazdoor Kisan Party president Afzal Shah Khamosh and Awami Workers Party provincial president ShahabKhattak.
Through a joint communiqué the participants stressed the need for drastic action against corruption, nepotism and stopping chances of military interventions and empowering masses in real sense.
The stakeholders were of the view that the country was passing through critical phase of its history and if effective and timely steps were not taken internal polarisation would breed on the basis of ethnicity and sects.
They also expressed shocl( over the prevailing tense situation on the country`s three borders with neighbouring states.
The participants emphasised the need for constituting a social contract to ensure complete eradication of sectarianism, terrorism and restoration of peace in the country.
Representatives of various political parties also asked for devolution of powers, provincial autonomy, and bringing back the plundered wealth to Pakistan.
Besides, they also urged political parties to join hands for development of the country, especially the hitherto neglected areas to bring them at a par with developed ones.
