LAHORE: The Lahore High Court on Monday granted post-arrest bail to former chairman of Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB) and PPP leader Asif Hashmi in a case of alleged tampering with the official record.
The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) had registered the case against Hashmi and also arrested him.
Hashmi`s counsel argued before the court that the case against his client was registered on baseless allegations merely on political considerations.
Justice Syed Shahbaz Ali Rizvi allowed the petition and granted bail to Hashmi subject to furnishing of bail bonds.
An accountability court recently acquitted Hashmi in three references made by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) against him and others.
He served as chairman of the ETPB between 2007 and 2013. He was accused of multiple charges including misusing his authority and misappropriation of public funds.
He also faces trial in different cases made against him by the FIA.
However, he has been acquitted in a case of distributing ETPB donations of millions of rupees on personal liking. The FIA also alleged that Hashmi failed to justify the alleged stealing of Rs34,000 from the donations amount. However, a special court central had acquitted him for lack of evidence.
