Loans on donors` terms unacceptable, says Khattak

PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Pervez Khattak on Monday said his government had decided to accept loans on the basis of the needs of the province and its people and not on the donors` conditions and priorities, which was a practice of its predecessors.

`We have framed our own policy for securing foreign assistance on realistic grounds,` he told a Pakistan-Japan investor group led by MNA Sajida Zulfiqar during a meeting at the Chief Minister`s Secretariat here.

The group offered Rs1 billion for the Tameer-i-School programme under the Counter Value Fund and showed interest in investing money in different sectors of the province on part of Japanese trade and business community, said a handout issued here.

The chief minister apprised visitors of his government`s development strategies.

He said the government would ensure the transparent use of foreign aid and the timely achievement of targets to benefit the people of its benefits.

`We will neither sit idle nor will we keep the provincial government and people waiting for years for foreign aid to complete our important development projects but will do it through efficient use of our own resources,` he said.

The chief minister asked the relevant authorities to put some selected schemes before donors for approval.

`I am confident that the collective wisdom backed by technical expertise of the development partners, civil society, sustained political will and the donors` commitment will provide necessary inputs for achieving successful results under the eight goals of the Strategic Development Partnership Framework,` he said.

Mr Khattak said his government was committed to ensuring peace and rule of law, economic growth, job creation, provision of health and education tom people, gender equality, better fiscal space, and transparency and accountability in government affairs.He said the PTI government had successfully restored the confidence of donor agencies and international community due to its transparent economic and fiscal measures with cover of legislation and all of them were quite sure that the taxpayers` money would be spent in transparent and judicious manner.

The visitors assured full support and assistance to the government for human development and said the government wisely switched its policies and priorities from material development to human welfare.
